The Rotary Foundation

Karan Eveleigh

Karen explained how the charity has grown so much in the Rotary year ending June 2015 having handed out grants totalling USD224 million. And in the centenary year it raised USD304 million. (Not grants given out) The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understand and goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty.
Each year, Rotary selects 100 individuals from around the world to receive funded academic fellowships at one of our Rotary peace centres. These fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board, round trip transportation ad all internship and field study expenses. Applications for a Peace Fellowship will normally be supported by a Rotary Club, but all costs are covered by the central Rotary Foundation offices.
END POLIO NOW programme is one of the biggest activities within Rotary Foundation. In the mid 1980s, when the programme started, there were 350,000 cases reported in a year, 2015 saw 74 cases, 2016 37 cases and in 2017 so far 6 cases in Afghanistan and 5 in Pakistan. If we don't eradicate polio now it could be back up to 200,000 within ten years.
A thoroughly enlightening and enjoyable talk that we all really enjoyed.
